After a thrilling Moore League win over Millikan last week, Wilson is back home Friday night to host Compton.
The victory marked the first marquee league win for first-year coach Raudric Curtis, but he’s making sure his team doesn’t dwell on it too long. Curtis said he told the Bruins it was fine to enjoy the excitement for a couple of days, but quickly shifted their focus to the task at hand.
For Wilson, senior Thomas Jones continues to be the ultimate utility player, making an impact in all phases. Jemel Grigsby has been a key two-way contributor, while senior quarterback Mack Cooper has provided steady leadership under center.
The Bruins have won eight of their last 10 against Compton, but the Tarbabes have taken two of the last four, including a 27-25 thriller in 2022.
Compton gets a big boost this week with the CIF-SS Sit-Out Period coming to an end, which allows two key starters to make their season debut. Senior quarterback Leton Washington and junior Sacramento State commit Edward Rivera are expected to make an immediate impact.
Rivera will also help strengthen a secondary that has struggled against explosive plays.
While the return of Washington and Rivera gives the Tarbabes more versatility offensively, Compton coach Calvin Bryant emphasized the importance of balance. He said his team will still need to establish the run game and credited the players who stepped in at quarterback earlier in the season.
With standout skill players on both sides, Friday’s contest could be decided in the trenches and whichever team can control the line of scrimmage.
