Wilson Football Hosts College Showcase

The562’s coverage of Long Beach Wilson Athletics is sponsored by Joel Bitonio, Class of 2009.

The Wilson football program took steps to getting better last week as they hosted their showcase with Cerritos, Dominguez and Irvine in attendance.

“It was a fantastic day to show our organization,” Wilson coach Raudric Curtis said. “To show our preparation. I always like to learn through play and learn through competition.”

The Bruins did just that as each school rotated through linemen and passing drills before capping the afternoon with 7-on-7 play in rotation.

Wilson’s Mack Cooper, Evan Mack, and Thomas Jones are some of the returners Curtis will lean on after the Bruins’ playoff run last season. Cooper gives them a returning QB with experience while Mack has blown up into one of the most heavily sought-after recruits in the city with offers from several big-time college programs.

“I decided for a very passing-heavy and lineman-heavy offseason,” Curtis said. “I’ve tried to get us in as many competitions as possible. We can pick up some momentum from last year–they had some success, so we’re not starting from scratch, and I didn’t want that to be the expectation that we’re going back to square one.”

The Bruins made the Division 9 CIF-SS championship last game where they fell by a point to cap a 9-5 season.

“We have a lot of players that played great football going into the playoffs,” Curtis said.
