The562’s coverage of football in 2024-25 is sponsored by The Terry Donahue Memorial California Showcase.
Focusing on giving athletes an opportunity to showcase their abilities in front of college coaches, the Long Beach Millikan football program hosted their college showcase Wednesday night.
The Rams were joined by Leuzinger, as the two teams competed in various drills during the two-hour event with more than 30 college coaches in attendance.
“This was an opportunity for the kids,” Millikan coach Romeo Pellum said. “That’s the whole point of inviting another school; to be able to have them get an opportunity to be seen as well. It’s always better when it’s not our ones going against our own ones.”
With limited reps during each drill, each school gave their athletes an opportunity to shine, including Millikan’s Peyton McCutcheon who had pancaked a Leuzinger offensive lineman during one of the drills.
“It was great getting some good competition today,” McCutheon said. “It was amazing coming out here to see the coaches. It was a good think, blessed to be out here.”
Coaches from around the country lined the sidelines including USC, Wyoming, Nevada, UNLV, Arizona State, San Jose State, San Diego State, Montana State, Minnesota, BYU, University of San Diego, UCLA, Washington, Stanford, North Carolina, Oregon, California, Missouri, Colorado State, and Calumet College.
Along with those programs, local junior colleges were in attendance like LBCC and Whittier College.
