It was a special night at Wilson as the school continued its centennial celebration taking on Huntington Beach – the Bruins’ first-ever opponent in their inaugural season.
However, senior Ohio State commit Brady Edmunds and the Oilers spoiled the Bruins’ party with a 31-6 victory tossing four first-half touchdowns.
“I think we’re learning what we wanted to learn from a tough preseason,” Wilson coach Raudric Curtis said. “Who can play? Who can handle the adversity? What is our identity this year versus last year? And as you mentioned, some of those things are going to be crystallized, some of those things are obvious that we need to go in different directions. So all this is to get better and better.”
Edmunds wasted no time showing his abilities as he aired out a deep throw and found Skylar Robinson for a 69-yard touchdown on the game’s opening play to give the Oilers a 7-0 lead 20 seconds into the contest.
Wilson (0-3) went 3-and-out on their opening drive and Huntington Beach went right back to work. This time the Oilers put together a 12-play, 62-yard drive that was capped by Edmunds second touchdown throw of the night – a two-yard pass to Nathan Santillian to give the visitors a 14-0 lead with three minutes left in the first quarter.
The Bruins got some motion going on their next drive as Logan Trafas and Jemel Grigsby got loose for some big runs, but the drive stalled as Wilson had to punt on the drive.
The Oilers (3-0) went to the run attack on their next drive as Dallas Miller had two carries for 20 yards and Edmunds capped the drive with his third touchdown of the night when he found Kye Crump for a touchdown to push the lead to 21-0 with 11:05 left in the second quarter.
The Wilson offense struggles continued on the next drive as a false start on third down put the Bruins behind the chains and a fumble ended the drive to give the Oilers a short porch.
Edmunds kept his connection going with Robinson for two catches and 32 yards, however Wilson kept the Oilers out of the end zone as they settled for a field goal to extend the lead to 24-0 with 5:06 left.
On the Bruins next drive Grigsby had a couple nice runs, but once again Wilson was unable to get things going as they’d be forced to punt.
With a short field after some flags on the punt return, Edmunds took advantage of the short field as he connected with Dylin Bruce for 16 yards and then found Robinson for a one-handed catch to push Huntington Beach’s lead to 31-0 at half.
Edmunds finished the half 12-12 for 170 yards and four touchdowns, and Robinson had a five catches, 122 yards and two touchdowns.
At halftime, Wilson honored its 2026 Hall of Fame class that included Nicole Grayson Bodnar Class of 2003, Maria Sop Class of 2008, John Sagehorn Class of 1971, Matt Sagehorn from the Class of 2006, David Hodges Class of 1986 and Nyjah Cousar Class of 2009.
Wilson came out of the half with new life and focused on the run attack as Grigsby had four carries for 24 yards on the opening drive. Part of that game plan was to ease sophomore Aiden Caro into the game as he came in at quarterback with a slightly banged up Trafas sitting out the second half.
Caro had a couple completions on the drive as the Bruins got into Oilers’ territory, however the drive stalled as Wilson turned the ball over on downs.
On Huntington Beach’s next drive Kye Crump got loose for a 41-yard run, but Grigsby came up with a big interception in the end zone to keep the Oilers from scoring.
“We came out at halftime. We made some adjustments,” Curtis said. “We were able to kind of keep them off the board, and were able to move the ball a little bit more. So, all those are all things that we’re taking into Saturday, and hopefully we’re a better team than this week going into the next week.”
That interception got the Bruins’ offense going as Caro and Kyle Harris connected multiple times as Wilson drove into Oiler’s territory but weren’t able to get points after a field goal was blocked.
Two drives later Wilson got into the end zone as Caro found Harris for an 11-yard touchdown to make it a 31-6 game.
Wilson will be back on the road next Friday when they travel to take on Dana Hills.
