The Cabrillo boys’ water polo program is one of many that has faced a downward trend in sports participation over the last few years, but the Jaguars have a steady presence in longtime coach Lawrence Durand, who’s looking to build some stability within his program.

Cabrillo will have just a handful of returners, including senior dual-sport athlete Santiago Gonzalez and junior Ben Caro, who has continued to develop as a leader and utility player. The Jaguars will be very young this year but have a couple of promising newcomers in Ezequiel Romero and Angel Duque.

Last year, the Jaguars finished 4-8 and were unable to pick up a Moore League win. Cabrillo’s non-league slate this year consists of Montebello, Whitney, Mark Keppel, and Birmingham, and the Jags will begin league play at Millikan on Sept. 22.

“We will stabilize the program back to competitive play with Cabrillo’s determination, courage, and passion from our athletes, administration, families and community,” said Durand.
