The Long Beach State women’s soccer team continued its historic start to the season Saturday as the Beach defeated Weber State 3-0 at George Allen Field.
During Mauricio Ingrassia’s 23 years at the helm of the LBSU has had plenty of phenomenal years. The team has won Big West championships, made deep runs in the NCAA Tournament – but Saturday marked a first for the long-time coach’s tenure.
With their win over the Wildcats, Long Beach State started the season with its fifth straight clean sheet – a first in program history. The Beach (4-0-1) are one of two programs in the nation that have yet to give up a goal through five games and nine teams that haven’t given up a goal at all.
“I think it’s a collective – yes the defense is doing their job,” Long Beach State coach Mauricio Ingrassia said. “The goalkeepers are doing their job, but we’re keeping the ball.”
That offensive pressure has continued to pay dividends for Long Beach State and it continued on Saturday as Cherrie Cox scored in the 28th minute on an assist from Kailey Supa to put the Beach up 1-0 early.
LBSU continued to keep up throughout the first half as the team outshot Weber State 9-1 in the first half. Cox kept the pressure on the Wildcats scoring her second goal l in the first 30 seconds of the second half – bringing her total to six on the year matching her total from last season.
“Personally, I have my own goals,” Cox said. “We started off strong, but nothing else helps like having a great team that supports my own goals beside it. We have our own team goals too. We want to have the first shot, first tackle, first goal and I think we’re really working hard to get that and it’s been paying off and from there our momentum carries us and then the sky’s the limit for our team.”
While the offense was clicking for the Beach, sophomore Amaya Sanles got her first start and didn’t disappoint as she pushed Long Beach State to 450 minutes without giving up a goal.
“Definitely had some pressure,” Sanles said. “(Aurora) Schuck did a great job in our defense maintaining shutouts. I knew going into it I had to make a shutout today.”
Kailey Supa put the game away when she scored her second goal of the season to put LBSU up 3-0.
The Beach will be back at George Allen Field next Thursday when they host Portland at 7 p.m.
