All-City Newcomer of the Year: Long Beach Coast/Regulators

It’s difficult to imagine a better first impression than the one the Long Beach Coast has made.

In its inaugural season, Long Beach’s new Pioneer Baseball League club has done more than bring professional baseball back to Bohl Diamond at Blair Field. It has reintroduced the city to summer nights at the ballpark, created a new gathering place for families and quickly become part of Long Beach’s sports identity.

That combination makes the Coast The562.org’s choice for Newcomer of the Year.

The excitement began months before the first pitch. When the franchise unveiled its name and branding, team officials said the Coast would represent Long Beach’s unique culture and history while creating something residents could rally around. Ownership, which includes Long Beach legend Warren G, said the club was built for the community while embracing the city’s connection to the ocean and its independent spirit.

The organization reinforced that message by introducing an alter ego, the Regulators, a secondary identity the team wears once a week that immediately became a fan favorite.

By Opening Day, it was clear Long Beach was ready to embrace its newest team.

After opening the season with a 9-3 road trip, the Coast returned home to a sold-out Blair Field on June 2. More than 3,000 fans packed the renovated ballpark to welcome professional baseball back to the city. The Coast rewarded them with a convincing 13-4 victory, but the final score almost felt secondary to the atmosphere surrounding the night.

“It’s a full-circle moment for me, and it’s great to be part of history, especially for the city of Long Beach and being from the area,” local product JJ Almeda said before the home opener. “It’s been especially cool to see how the fans have embraced the new team with all the support.”

Winning has helped fuel the excitement. The Coast entered its home opener riding a six-game winning streak behind one of the Pioneer League’s most explosive offenses, then extended that momentum in front of its hometown fans. Long Beach currently sits in second place in the Pioneer League standings.

No one knows what the future holds, but the early signs point toward a franchise that has already established itself as more than a baseball team.
