Jordan Panthers Softball Preview

The562’s coverage of Jordan Athletics is sponsored by former LBUSD superintendent Chris Steinhauser and the Timu Foundation.

In his first season at the helm, Alexander Alo has brought fresh energy and high expectations to the Jordan High softball program.

Alo, a South Bay native and longtime travel ball coach, wasn’t necessarily looking to return to the high school ranks. But when the opportunity presented itself at Jordan, he embraced the challenge and he believes the Panthers are trending in the right direction.

“I see a ton of talent,” Alo said. “We have a good mix of returners and young ladies who joined the program. They’re all hard workers, and they’re excited for the season. We’ve been leveling up every single practice.”

Jordan finished fifth in the Moore League last season, but there’s optimism surrounding a group that features just two seniors and a core of underclassmen eager to prove themselves.

Leading the way is junior infielder Michelle Hernandez, a team captain with extensive travel ball experience. Alo described her presence as invaluable.

“It’s like having an extra coach out there,” he said. “She’s super patient. She leads by example. She works with her teammates and communicates well. She’s been absolutely priceless for us.”

Hernandez said the adjustment to a new coaching staff has been positive.

“It’s been good,” she said. “They’re very disciplinary and I feel like they help our team just be able to come more together and be able to work together better.”

She added that Alo’s steady approach has resonated with the roster.

“He’s very patient with the girls,” Hernandez said. “If we end up making a mistake, he still helps us come over it. He just helps all of us grow individually and then as a team together.”

In the circle, Jordan will lean on freshman Angelina Castro, who already has a strong rapport with her coach from the travel circuit. Castro transitioned into pitching last year after initially playing third base and quickly made an impact.

“She’s just been getting better and better with every outing,” Alo said. “She’s got a heck of a bat on her. She leads in extra-base hits, triples and home runs. She’s absolute dynamite.”

Behind the plate, freshman Cassandra Rubio is expected to handle catching duties, giving the Panthers a youthful battery with significant upside.

The infield features junior Janecy Sablon at first base, junior Marie Romero at second, Hernandez at third and sophomore Karissa Gaitin at shortstop. Alo believes the chemistry among that group will be a strength.

“These girls are focused,” he said. “The attention they give every single practice shows.”

In the outfield, sophomore Hazel Sandoval patrols center field, bringing speed and athleticism after helping Jordan’s flag football team reach the playoffs. Sophomore Yessenia Lara slots into right field, while sophomore Melissa Lizarraga is projected in left.

Senior Pearl Penana and senior Lina Mojica will provide veteran leadership and versatility. Penana is expected to contribute as a utility player and pitcher.

With a roster dominated by freshmen and sophomores, Alo said the key will be maximizing repetitions and building confidence early.

“We’re looking to get as many reps as possible for the underclassmen,” he said. “We’re excited. We’ve got great support from the parents and administration. The girls come to practice with smiles, and they’re putting in the work.”

Hernandez echoed that optimism.

“I’m excited for everyone overall, just the whole team,” she said. “Especially with our new pitcher, Angelina. I’m excited to see how she does this season. Hopefully, we do good.”

Jordan opens the season at Lawndale on March 5 before beginning Moore League play on March 12.
