After a down season last year, there really isn’t anywhere for the Compton soccer team to go but up. The Tarbabes finished their last season without a home field and went winless, but they’re looking to revamp the program on the brand new field that’s part of the school’s long-awaited campus remodel.
The Tarbabes will have a mix of different levels of experience, including newer faces like freshman Katheryne Jaramillo Flores (pictured). Flores says she’s looking to be a part of a new spark for the Compton soccer team as she begins her high school career.
“I just want to inspire other girls to play soccer,” she said. “Some of the other girls haven’t played as much but I feel like seeing other girls can help that spark.”
The girls’ soccer team has had a rough couple of seasons without a designated home field, but they’re hoping the new field can be part of that spark for the program. During the fall, both the Compton football and flag football teams reaped the benefits of the new field and had up years, with the flag football team picking up the first two playoff wins in program history.
“We don’t want to lose the streak of our school. We’ve been winning with football, flag football and now basketball, so we just want to keep that going,” Flores said.
The Tarbabes are going into the season searching for their first win in almost two years, with their last win coming against Compton Early College in December of 2023.
Compton opened the season with a loss to Compton Early College, and they’ll finish out November with a couple non-league matchups against Lynwood, Centennial and Schurr. The Tarbabes will begin their Moore League schedule against Wilson at home on Dec. 9.
