Needing a win on Friday, Compton got back to what it does best.
The Tarbabes looked to their ground game against Cabrillo, where their dynamic rushing attack ran for over 300 yards and five touchdowns in a 48-27 win. Compton also found touchdowns on all three phases on Friday for what was its first Moore League win since September of 2023.
“It felt good to get a win. It’s tough to not be healthy and then experience those losses so hopefully our guys learned from their mistakes,” said Compton coach Calvin Bryant after the game. “We’ll get a chance to look at the film and see what we can do to get better moving forward.”
Trevon Fair had two touchdowns on 10 carries with 184 yards—a highly efficient 18 yards per carry. Micah Hawkins had 97 yards with two rushing touchdowns along with a 60-yard punt return for a touchdown. Nate Willard and Ameer Freeman also had touchdowns through the ground.
“This week we concentrated a little more on the ground game and it paid a bit of dividends,” Bryant said. “Our guys did a lot of great things but we’re hoping to be able to [run and pass] in the near future and be able to keep teams off balanced.”
Cabrillo scored its most points since its Week 2 win against LA Jordan, and gave quarterback Fernando Leanos a busy night. Leanos threw 36 passes while racking up 279 passing yards and three total touchdowns. Danny Lopez had 110 passing yards and a touchdown while Armon Lumpkin had 68 yards and a score.
“It was gutsy. We didn’t give up and we kept playing,” said Cabrillo coach Malcolm Manuel. “I think there’s a lot of good to take away especially with how our young players played today, but it’s a week to week project. We want to come out and be better and be more physical. Our guys are fighting so we’re going to keep coaching them and showing up.”
Nate Willard put Compton on the board early with a 30-yard pick-six on Cabrillo’s opening drive. The Tarbabes struck again on their first offensive possession, where Willard found his second of the game with a four yard scamper to double to lead.
Cabrillo used a pair of Compton defensive flags to move down the field on its next drive, using a nice 15-yard pass-and-catch from Leanos to Lopez to keep the drive alive. Leanos capped the drive off with a one-yard rush to put the Jaguars on the score board.
Compton found one more touchdown before the half on a 60-yard punt return by Hawkins to start his busy night. Freeman then found his touchdown to open the half, a one-yard rush to give Compton a 27-7 lead in the third.
The Jaguars found their second touchdown of the game after a two play drive, including a 75-yard strike from Leanos to Stephen Walker. Compton replied with an 11-yard strike on the ground from Hawkins.
The Tarbabes added to their lead with Hawkins’ second touchdown rush of the game and third total touchdown.
“It meant a lot,” Hawkins said of contributing. “It feels amazing but the job isn’t done yet. We still have a couple more teams and there’s more to come.”
Cabrillo replied on a Leanos touchdown pass to Danny Lopez. Compton added a touchdown on the ground from Fair before a Cabrillo touchdown from Leanos to Lumpkin before the end of the first quarter.
The Jaguars will return to league play against Lakewood next week while Compton will be at Wilson.
