Looking to start the Moore League season with a win, Lakewood seniors Kade Casillas and Tiwan Jones scored four touchdowns as the Lancers defeated Compton 31-0 Friday night.

On the opening drive Casillas found Jones down field for a 40-yard gain and then scrambled for a 9-yard gain to keep Lakewood moving down the field.

Casillas then found Kagiso Boikanyo for a 6-yard touchdown to give the Lancers a 7-0 lead with 9:35 left in the first.

After a couple weeks of their run game being stalled, Nate Willard took the opening handoff for a first down, however the Tarbabes had to punt on the drive.

The Lancers (3-2) wasted no time getting back in the end zone as Casillas found a wide open Jones for a 70-yard touchdown to push Lakewood’s lead to 14-0 midway through the first half.

“I think it all starts at practice, you know, we just got to be able to practice well, practice fast, efficiently and discipline, and that all translates to the games in the field,” Jones said.

With some injuries at quarterback, Compton’s rushing attack has had trouble moving the ball downfield as teams play the run. That continued on the next drive as Ronnie Mixon and Micah Hawkins got bottled up and had to punt.

Nasir Jenkins rushed for 21 yards and Casillas got loose for a 10-yard gain before Casillas found Jones again – this time a 54-yard touchdown to push the lead to 21-0 with 11:47 left until halftime. Casillas finished the game with 224 yards passing for three touchdowns. Jones has four catches for 168 yards and two touchdowns.

“Offensively, we’re okay,” Lakewood coach Mario Morales said. “We’re still kind of missing on some early shots. We’re going to get better.”

Lakewood’s Jake Vegas pushed the lead to 24-0 at halftime with a field goal.

Compton’s defense settled down and came up with some big stops and didn’t give up another offensive touchdown.

“We gave up some big pass plays in the first half,” Compton coach Calvin Bryant said. “As far as the run game, we played great. We just got to get better.”

In the second half, there was an injury delay as a Compton athlete went down and emergency personnel had to be called and take him to the hospital.

After the delay, Lakewood forced a punt and Jones scored his third touchdown of the night to put the Lancers up 31-0.

Compton will be on the road for the first time when they take on Cabrillo next week and Lakewood will host Poly.
