PREVIEW: Compton Vs. Lakewood, Football

The562’s coverage of Lakewood Athletics is sponsored by J.P. Crawford, Class of 2013.

Just like they did a year ago, Lakewood and Compton will clash to open Moore League action.

Lakewood (2-2) heads to Compton after a big win against Mayfair last week to reclaim the Milk Bucket trophy in over a decade. While the Tarbabes (2-2) are coming off two one-score losses including last week where Compton allowed a late touchdown in their loss to Dorsey.

Kade Casillas will be a big part of what the Lancers want to do after amassing 1,000 yards of total offense to start the season. He’ll look to get his playmakers involved with Kenny Niumataelu and Tiwan Jones involved.

Compton’s offense has stalled after exploding out of the gate in their first two games scoring 97 points in two wins. However, the Tarbabes have since only scored 21 points, seven of those points coming on a blocked punt that was recovered for a touchdown.

Last year, Lakewood dominated the contest 57-0 and had a running clock that started in the second quarter before the game was eventually called with eight minutes remaining in the fourth due to a Compton player suffering an injury that required an ambulance to be called.

While Compton’s offense has slowed down, their defense has been their biggest bright spot of the season – allowing only 28 points across four games. How the defense does against Casillas and the Lakewood playmakers will play a big part of how the game goes.

Lakewood will load the box on defense when Compton goes into their run formation and will force the Compton offense to have a balanced game plan.

Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Compton.
