For Wilson’s Marek Turner, it’s all about getting the job done.
So, when the Wilson boys volleyball team trailed Godinez 21-18 in the fourth set, the UCLA signee and USA Volleyball star Turner did what he needed to – delivering four straight kills to give the Bruins the lead as they went on to win the match 25-19, 25-19, 23-25 25-22. Wilson’s defeat of Godinez in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs advances them to a road match in the second round.
“With games like this,” Turner said. “It’s just ‘get the job done.’ Foot on the gas, that’s all it is.”
Throughout the final three sets, it was all about consistent play as Wilson’s miscues allowed Godinez to stay close in every set and take the third set.
“The first thing is consistency,” Wilson coach DJ Koenen said. “Godinez was consistent throughout the entire match, no matter what was going on and that’s where we struggled. That’s why we fell behind.”
While Turner did the heavy lifting for the Bruins finishing with 29 kills and 3 aces, Rony Sanchez, Maurice White, Tobin Hackney and Emmett Rebennack did their part when the Godinez block focused on Turner.
In the final set, Sanchez had four kills and his 10th kill of the match cut the Grizzlies’ lead to 20-18.
After Turner’s four straight kills, Rebennack delivered his 10th kill to give the Bruins’ match point. White finished the game with 8 kills.
Wilson advances to a road match at Royal on Saturday in the second round.
