The Jordan Panthers have been ranked in the CIF-SS Division 7 polls this season, and are still receiving votes as one of the best teams in their division. The biggest key for the Panthers is finding a way into the playoffs.

J-Town took a big step in the right direction on Tuesday, closing the first round of Moore League play with a 7-3 win over Cabrillo in the 710 Rivalry.

The Panthers scored in each of the first three innings to race out to a 4-0 lead, which they never surrendered. The host Jags were able to chip away at the deficit with runs in the third and fourth frames, but would never get any closer than two.

Jordan busted out for a three-spot in the top of the sixth to effectively put the game away, improving their record to 9-5 overall and 2-4 in league play. The Panthers have seven games left in the regular season, hoping to finish above .500 and thus eligible for an at-large playoff berth.

Junior shortstop JJ Nielsen had a nice day for J-Town, going 2/4 with a walk, two runs scored, an RBI, and four stolen bases. Jordan stole eight bases as a team, getting three from Oswaldo Martinez and another from Damian Mariscal.

Mariscal also had two hits and a pair of RBIs for Jordan, and senior Cha’san Haynes had a pair of hits out of the 9 hole. Martinez also came in to pitch and was highly effective to close out the game and secure the win, tossing 3.1 innings while allowing a run on three hits and no walks.

J-Town’s offense was patient against the Jags, working eight walks on the day while only issuing one free pass of their own.

Lincoln Dean had a pair of hits, including a double, to go along with two RBIs to lead the Cabrillo offense. Jose Cadena, Jr. and Bendito Diaz were each 1/2 at the plate with a run scored for Cabrillo.

Both teams will be back in action on Thursday as Jordan visits Wilson and Cabrillo hosts Lakewood.
