Boys’ Volleyball: Avalon Wins Own Tournament Championship

Avalon boys’ volleyball invited a quality crop of teams for its second annual tournament and won the championship while taking seven of eight matches played on Catalina Island.

The Lancers (11-8, 4-0) suffered their only loss of the day in pool play to Southland Christian 25-20, 25-22, a ranked team in Division 6 with a 14-3 record. Avalon went on to beat Legacy College Prep 25-18, 25-19, Magnolia Science Reseda 25-15, 25-10 and Magnolia Science Van Nuys 25-19, 25-16 to earn a rematch with Southland Christian.

Avalon made it count by taking down Southland Christian in dominant fashion 25-16, 25-15.

The Lancers were led by junior outside hitter Jacob Mello’s 36 kills and 55 digs on the day. Junior setter Aaron Meza had 86 assist, nine aces, eight kills and four blocks. Sophomore Erick Madriz chipped in 17 kills and five blocks, while senior David Mulgado had 26 kills and 33 digs.

Defensively, junior Chris Gonzales was fantastic with four blocks and 13 digs alongside Uriel Gonzales who finished with 11 kills and 39 digs.
