Football Signing Day: Jordan Washington Graduating Early, Headed To Arizona

Jordan Washington finalized a historic decision on Wednesday morning.

The Jordan High School football and track star signed his National Letter Of Intent to the University of Arizona, and became the first Panthers football player to graduate early in order to pursue a collegiate scholarship opportunity.

“It’s a big day for Jordan athletics, and he represents us very well,” Jordan athletic director Lamar Biffle said.

Jordan football coach Jon Nielsen hosted a signing day celebration for Washington in the new state-of-the-art auditorium on campus. The event took full advantage of the big screen to play the promotional video for Washington provided by Arizona.

“It’s good enough to make a grown man cry,” Washington said. “It’s crazy because (this school) has never seen this before. All four years staying at your home school and getting an opportunity like this, and then especially enjoying it in the new facilities… It’s a special day.”

Washington spoke to the crowd of family, friends, students and dignitaries like Long Beach Unified School District Superintendent Jill Baker and City Of Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson, who presented Washington with a certificate of recognition.

“If you work hard you can have the opportunity to do whatever you want to do in life,” Richardson said. “And now you have that ticket, Jordan. You have that same ticket to go to college. To create whatever life you want to have to make an impact on the world, to inspire young people to follow in your footsteps, or go beyond what you do.”

“I’m going to celebrate today, not just for myself, but for everybody,” Washington said. “This is a win for everybody.”

Neilson also took the mic to compliment the dedication Washington showed in the classroom to get his credits needed for early graduation.

“It took some work and he did the work,” Neilson said. “The student and the man he became is why everyone is here.”

Washington was a dynamic running back at Jordan while racking up over 4,000 yards and 47 touchdowns in three seasons. He was also CIF champion sprinter, but graduating early means he will miss his senior track and field season.

“That is my sacrifice,” Washington said. “I’ve sacrificed winning in other sports, but it will benefit me to be able to play next year and get me the start of my dreams of going to the NFL.”

Washington is also going to Arizona where Jordan High legend Ortege Jenkins also went and left his name in the Wildcats history books.

“I think (Washington) will have a great transition with a great coaching staff’s family atmosphere,” Jenkins said. “I think he’ll blend right in. Going early is even better because you acclimate to what’s going on. You understand how to be a professional in the classroom and on the field.”
