Congratulations to our Athletes of the Week and thanks to the Long Beach Century Club and Naples Rib Company for their support.

HIGH SCHOOL

Josh “Noodles” Cason, Long Beach Poly Football

Poly senior Josh “Noodles” Cason did yeoman’s work on the islands last week in Poly’s season opener. Cason started at middle linebacker and running back and made an impact at both positions, scoring two touchdowns rushing and grabbing an interception and returning it for a score on defense.

Quimari Shemwell, Long Beach Poly Football

Poly’s put more defensive backs into the NFL than any other high school, but Quimari Shemwell might have made history for the Jackrabbits on Friday. He had two interceptions in the third quarter, and returned both for touchdowns as part of the Jackrabbits’ 60-28 season-opening win.

COLLEGE

Julie Lopez, Long Beach State Soccer

The freshman scored the lone goal in The Beach’s exhibition draw with USC on Saturday. The goal came late in the 74th minute to force a 1-1 tie with the No. 22 Trojans. The Beach are favored to win the Big West and open their season at home this week.
