Long Beach State took an early lead and never looked back to win the 2023 Big West Men’s Golf Championship in La Quinta on Monday.

Not only did the Beach win its fourth Big West title, sophomore Ian Gilligan won the individual title by breaking a three-way tie for first place with a birdie on the sudden death playoff hole.

As a team, LBSU finished 12-under par and two strokes ahead of second-place finisher Cal State Fullerton. All five Beach players finished in the Top 25.

Gilligan shot a 1-under 71 in the final round, and then sunk a 20-foot shot to win the playoff on the 18th hole. Gilligan is LBSU’s first individual champion since Brett Lederer won in 2008. The Beach has now had nine Big West individual champions since 1972.

The Beach is headed to the NCAA Regionals this week.
