Congratulations to our Athletes of the Week and thanks to the Long Beach Century Club and Naples Rib Company for their support.

HIGH SCHOOL

Brody Owen, St. Anthony Volleyball

St. Anthony’s boys’ volleyball team is still alone in first place in the Camino Real League after a sweep of league rival Salesian last week on Senior Night. Brody Owen was the leader for the Saints in the win, which puts the Saints on the brink of clinching the league title.

Nate Berumen, Long Beach Poly Baseball

Long Beach Poly junior second baseman Nate Berumen had quite a week for the Jackrabbits, who are alone in the Moore League with an undefeated record. Berumen went 3-4 with a run in a 4-0 win over Lakewood, 2-2 with two runs in an 11-0 win over Cabrillo, and then had the game-winning RBI in a 4-3 win over Millikan.

Jason Parra, Millikan Track & Field

Millikan’s Jason Parra broke his own city two-mile record last weekend at the Arcadia Invitational, running the 3200 in 8:46.50. Parra’s previous best was an 8:54.17, and he’s now nine seconds faster than Poly’s Jim Chaffin, who in 1970 was the only other Long Beach high schooler to run the 3200 in under nine minutes.

Kennadi Reed, Long Beach Poly Track & Field

Long Beach Poly senior leader Kennadi Reed had a great weekend at the Arcadia Invitational, running a PR 43.67 in the 300 hurdles to win her race; that’s the second-fastest time in the CIF-SS and sixth-fastest time in the state.

Gabe Tyler, Long Beach Poly Track & Field

Long Beach Poly senior para-ambulatory athlete Gabe Tyler defended his 400 title at the Arcadia Invitational last weekend with a time of 1:20.99, as well as taking second in the 100. Tyler has qualified for the CIF State ambulatory races in the 100, 200, and 400 already.

Marek Turner, Wilson Volleyball

Wilson star sophomore helped lead the Bruins to their third consecutive Moore League title last week with 15 kills and nine digs in a sweep of Millikan. Turner is a member of the USA Youth National Team.

Nyla Springer, Long Beach Poly Softball

Senior Nyla Springer was a difference-maker in the circle for Poly in a huge win over Millikan last week. Spring pitched a complete game yielding five hits and one run, while striking out six.

COLLEGE

Samantha Fowler, Long Beach State Softball

Long Beach State’s pitching staff combined to post a 1.33 team ERA against UC San Diego on the way to a series win, led by senior Samantha Fowler who struck out eight in a complete game shutout in game two.
