HIGH SCHOOL

Ryan Pellum, Millikan Football

Millikan junior and reigning Moore League Player of the Year Ryan Pellum left his fingerprints all over the Rams’ dramatic 58-54 win over Jordan. Pellum had 165 yards receiving and a touchdown, a kickoff return for a touchdown, a blocked field goal, and played lockdown defense at cornerback.

Christian Chapman, Wilson Football

Christian Chapman had an excellent night for the Bruins in a narrow loss to Compton. Chapman had 22 carries for 238 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 10.8 yards per carry, the ninth-best single-game average in Wilson history.

Noah Furlow, St. Anthony Football

He wasn’t expecting to play in the game but after an injury, St. Anthony freshman Noah Furlow did what he needed to when his number was called at QB, throwing two touchdowns in a win over Marina. 

Brayden Downen, Lakewood Football

Lakewood quarterback Brayden Downen had four passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown in the Lancers’ win over Cabrillo.

Chloe Pravednikov, Wilson Volleyball

Wilson outside hitter Chloe Pravednikov had 24 kills against Millikan to keep the Bruins in sole possession of second place at the start of the second round of league play.

Layla Moore, Long Beach Poly Volleyball

Poly’s Layla Moore was big in Poly’s four-set win over Saint Joseph in the Steve Lewis Volleyfest. The sophomore had 11 kills, three aces and a pair of blocks for the Jackrabbits in the victory.

Victoria Valenzuela, St. Anthony Golf

The Lady Saints Golf team is still undefeated at 7-0 and improved to 3-0 in league play with a 244-289 victory over Paraclete last week. Valenzuela was the low scorer once again for the Saints.

COLLEGE

Summer Laskey, Long Beach State Soccer

Sophomore Summer Laskey scored a goal and registered an assist in the Beach’s 3-0 victory over CSU Bakersfield last week.

An LBC native, Mike Guardabascio has been covering Long Beach sports professionally for 13 years, with his work published in dozens of Southern California magazines and newspapers. He's won numerous awards for his writing as well as the CIF Southern Section’s Champion For Character Award, and is the author of three books about Long Beach history.
