HIGH SCHOOL

Phoenix Tusa, Long Beach Poly Football

Senior lineman Phoenix Tusa came up huge for Long Beach Poly in a statement win over Mission Viejo, 35-30. Tusa had three sacks and an interception for a touchdown.

Jahsiah Matua, Jordan Football

Jahsiah Matua had three sacks and two recovered fumbles to lead Jordan to a shutout win over Fairfax, moving the Panthers to 3-0 for just the second time in the last 15 years.

Jordan Anderson, Millikan Football

National recruit Jordan Anderson has made a big impact at Millikan this year, and in their big win over St. Francis he put up six catches for 187 yards and two touchdowns.

Jade Epps, Lakewood Volleyball

Jade Epps had an outstanding match for Lakewood in a dominant sweep of Poly last week. Epps posted 16 kills, 10 digs and four aces to lead the Lancers to the win.

COLLEGE

Qeanu Campbell-Caldwell, LBCC Football

LBCC quarterback and Millikan alum Qeanu Campbell-Caldwell led the Vikings to a blowout opening-week win as he went 16/26 for 255 yards and four touchdowns.

Lena Silano, Long Beach State Soccer

Silano scored what head coach Mauricio Ingrassia called the best goal he’d ever seen on his team’s home field last weekend, with an 88th minute equalizer that came via bicycle kick.

Zayna Meyer, Long Beach State Volleyball

Long Beach State freshman Zayna Meyer continued her excellent start to the year as she won her second consecutive Big West Setter of the Week award. Meyer led the Beach to two wins against Boise State and Notre Dame last week.

An LBC native, Mike Guardabascio has been covering Long Beach sports professionally for 13 years, with his work published in dozens of Southern California magazines and newspapers. He's won numerous awards for his writing as well as the CIF Southern Section’s Champion For Character Award, and is the author of three books about Long Beach history.
