HIGH SCHOOL

Ike Mikaele, Long Beach Poly Football

Long Beach Poly senior linebacker Ike Mikaele had a big game helping lead the Jackrabbits defense in holding Serra to just three points. Mikaele had three tackles for a loss, two sacks, and a fumble recovery against the Cavaliers.

Jordan Washington, Jordan Football

Jordan Washington helped lead the Panthers to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2019 with a big game against Peninsula. Washington started the game with an 89-yard touchdown run and ended it with an interception (earning the Panthers turnover chain). 

Noah Mallon

Senior Noah Mallon had two sacks in Lakewood’s first win of the year, leading his side of the ball as the Lancers defense flew around the field to hold the San Dimas offense to zero touchdowns.

Cortni Youngblood, Lakewood Volleyball

Lakewood senior Cortni Youngblood is a leader from the libero position, and she helped the Lancers to a sweep over Mater Dei last week with 12 digs and seven assists. The UC Santa Barbara commit also had 11 digs and four assists in a match against Marymount.

COLLEGE

Morgan Chacon, Long Beach State Volleyball

Morgan Chacon made the most of her Long Beach State debut as she led the Beach averaging 4.21 kills per set, 2.21 digs per set, 4.71 points per set, and hitting .259. She recorded two double-doubles in three matches with 17 kills and 10 digs against Oregon, and 16 kills and 13 digs at Portland State. She wrapped up the tournament with a career-high 26 kills while hitting .318 against No. 19 Oregon.

Mike Guardabascio
An LBC native, Mike Guardabascio has been covering Long Beach sports professionally for 13 years, with his work published in dozens of Southern California magazines and newspapers. He's won numerous awards for his writing as well as the CIF Southern Section’s Champion For Character Award, and is the author of three books about Long Beach history.
