HIGH SCHOOL

Amir Diaz Espinoza, Long Beach Poly Soccer

Long Beach Poly goalie Amir Diaz Espinoza helped the Jackrabbits nab a scoreless draw against CIF-SS Division 1 No. 5 Cathedral last week. He had 10 saves in the game including a last-minute PK save.

Chris Willis, Lakewood Basketball

Lakewood stud Chris Willis helped the Lancers to a 4-0 performance and the team championship in the Sonora Cage Classic last week. Willis hit the game-winning layup in a win over Mayfair in the championship and was named Tourney MVP. Willis had 25 points in the win over Canyon as well.

Tatiana Fernandez, St. Anthony Soccer

St. Anthony two-sport star Tatiana Fernandez had a big game on the pitch last week in a 4-1 win for the Saints’ girls’ soccer team. Fernandez, who also runs cross country at the school, had a hat trick in the win over St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy.

COLLEGE

Justina King, Long Beach State Basketball

Senior Justina King led the way with a team-leading 15 points, while adding three rebounds, three assists, and three steals in a win over Air Force last week. Long Beach State remained undefeated with the win.

An LBC native, Mike Guardabascio has been covering Long Beach sports professionally for 13 years, with his work published in dozens of Southern California magazines and newspapers. He's won numerous awards for his writing as well as the CIF Southern Section’s Champion For Character Award, and is the author of three books about Long Beach history.
