HIGH SCHOOL

Julia Sutedjo, Long Beach Poly Tennis

Long Beach Poly singles star Julia Sutedjo helped to power the Jackrabbits to their historic CIF-SS title. Sutedjo went 3-0 in the championship, the only Poly player to do so in the 10-8 win.

Hannah Tran/Melyn Lim, Long Beach Poly Tennis

The strength of Poly’s team throughout their championship run was their doubles tandems, which came through again in the championship. Hannah Tran and Melyn Lim went 2-1 on Saturday to help clinch the gold.

Charlie Lemmis, Long Beach Poly Water Polo

Long Beach Poly goalie Charlie Lemmis helped bring home the championship for the Jackrabbits last week, putting up seven saves in the semis and nine in the title game. Lemmis and the Poly defense had a scoreless quarter in both games.

Donovan Turner, Long Beach Poly Football

Long Beach Poly senior Donovan Turner helped lead a dominant effort on defense as the Jackrabbits held Upland to just five first downs in a 49-3 victory. Turner had an interception returned for a touchdown in the game as well.

Conor Hochberg, St. Anthony Football

St. Anthony’s QB Conor Hochberg has been lighting it up this playoffs. In the Saints’ quarterfinal win he had 319 yards passing and four touchdowns. Hochberg is over 300 yards passing in both Saints playoff wins.

Jordan Washington, Jordan Football

Panthers sophomore Jordan Washington was a star again on the road in the quarterfinals. He had 182 yards rushing and three touchdowns–all in the second half–to lead Jordan into the semifinals for the first time ever.

COLLEGE

Justina King, Long Beach State Basketball

Justina King led Long Beach State to a 2-0 start to the season last week as she recorded a total of 25 points en route to becoming the 26th player at LBSU to reach 1,000 points in her career.

An LBC native, Mike Guardabascio has been covering Long Beach sports professionally for 13 years, with his work published in dozens of Southern California magazines and newspapers. He's won numerous awards for his writing as well as the CIF Southern Section’s Champion For Character Award, and is the author of three books about Long Beach history.
