PREVIEW: Compton @ Walnut, CIF-SS Football Quarterfinals

After a historic win over Costa Mesa last week, Compton continues its quest for a CIF Division 12 title as they hit the road to face the Walnut Mustangs tonight in the quarterfinals. Game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.

In their dominant 58-0 win over Costa Mesa, it was simple for the Tarbabes:

Run the ball. Run the ball. Run the ball.

Erick Barrios, Kenneth Cox, and Deon Johnson combined for 445 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on just 22 carries as Compton’s double-wing offense created a lot of trouble for Costa Mesa.

The Mustangs (8-3) enter the contest on a four-game winning streak and beat Santiago, 17-0, last week.

Senior running back Ruben Rivera had 16 carries for 153 yards (1,067 yards and 15 touchdowns this year) and like Compton, the team relies on a heavy rushing attack.

They had zero passing yards in their win and average just under 40 passing yards per game compared to over 185 on the ground per contest.

The Mustangs defense has held seven opponents under 10 points but in all three of their losses, they allowed their opponents to average over six yards per carry.

Compton’s last CIF-SS championship was in 1977.
