Payne Lounsbery, Wilson Volleyball

Wilson senior Payne Lounsbery helped lead his Bruins to a CIF-SS championship last weekend, the first in program history. Lounsbery had a sensational match with 27 kills, three blocks, and an ace.

Anthony Eyanson, Lakewood Baseball

Lakewood’s Anthony Eyanson was solid on the mound and at the plate in a 10-3 first-round playoff win. Eyanson gave up three runs in five innings pitching and scored two runs and had an RBI offensively.

Rose Cano, St. Anthony Softball

Saints pitcher Rose Cano led her team to a wild card victory last week with a great showing in the circle, giving up one hit and striking out 18 batters in seven innings, facing just three batters over the minimum.

Jalen Pitre, Poly Basketball

Pepperdine signee Jalen Pitre helped lead the Jackrabbits to a CIF-SS Division 2AA quarterfinal win last week with 24 points against Orange Lutheran, also clinching a berth in the state playoffs.

Lily Buggs, Poly Basketball

Poly senior and Cal State LA signee Lily Buggs had a standout game in Poly’s Division 1 quarterfinal win over Bishop Montgomery last week, posting 25 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, and two steals in the win.

Daniel Murillo, Millikan Basketball

Millikan’s Daneil Murillo helped lead the Rams to a 6-1 first-round playoff win at Mary Star, gong 3-4 at the plate with two doubles and two runs scored in the victory.

Bella Alonso, Poly Softball

Poly junior pitcher Bella Alonso helped lead the Jackrabbits to a 5-0 win over Anaheim High in the first round of the playoffs last week. Alonso pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just two hits and striking out 16 batters.

An LBC native, Mike Guardabascio has been covering Long Beach sports professionally for 13 years, with his work published in dozens of Southern California magazines and newspapers. He's won numerous awards for his writing as well as the CIF Southern Section’s Champion For Character Award, and is the author of three books about Long Beach history.
