Long Beach Poly softball contributed to this crazy year of Moore League softball by upsetting Wilson 1-0 on Thursday at El Dorado Park.
“We’ve believed in our girls since day one, they just needed to believe in themselves,” Poly coach Elizabeth Sanches said. “Wilson is always a class act and played us tough but we found a way to piece together a run.”
Poly freshman Kassy Villegas’s triple and junior Ashley Vasquez’s pinch hit double provided all the offense junior pitcher Isabella Alonso need. She scattered three hits across her complete game performance while striking out eight batters. Seventy percent of her 97 pitches were strikes.
Poly sophomore Sakarah Buckner also played great defense behind Vasquez in center field.
“As always it was a total team effort and we’re excited to see what round two brings,” Sanches said.
The Jackrabbits and Bruins both have two league losses. They’re tied for third behind Millikan and Lakewood who both have one loss.
