High School Football Preview: Wilson vs. Compton

The spring season opener for both Wilson and Compton could be fast one tonight. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 at Wilson and it wouldn’t be a surprise if it’s over quickly with both teams looking to run the ball a lot.

Compton has always relied heavily on the double-wing formation’s potent rushing attack under coach Calvin Bryant, and Wilson has an inexperienced offensive line in front of a first-year starting quarterback.

“Right now I see us as a run heavy team until our quarterbacks can get their feet under them a little bit,” Wilson coach Mark Ziegenhagen said.

Wilson had junior Zander McLaurin and sophomore Brayden Downen battle for the starting quarterback position in practice but McLaurin will get the start. The Bruins running back by committee approach will feature junior Leroy Crook, sophomore Johnell Gray and junior Detroit Afusia.

Compton Allen Monroe will spearhead the creative misdirection that is the double-wing and will hand the ball off to talented running backs led by Louis Williams.

The last time Compton beat Wilson on the field was 2008, and in 2013 the Bruins had to forfeit this matchup. The Bruins have won the last two games by a large margin after a 19-18 thriller in 2017.
