LBCC Football Coach Brett Peabody Recovering From COVID-19

Longtime Long Beach City College football coach Brett Peabody confirmed Thursday afternoon that he’s recovering from COVID-19, alongside his wife, Celeste.

“I’ve been in bed for five days, I’ve lost 15 pounds, I’m getting skinny—I’m pretty pissed, honestly,” said Peabody, whose plan is to continue recovering at home as long as he’s able.

“My doctor told me don’t go to the hospital unless it feels like an elephant is sitting on my chest,” he said. “This is about the worst I’ve ever felt, it’s pretty miserable. Sweats, shakes, headaches—I get short of breath sometimes but that hasn’t been too bad.”

Peabody said he’s been sick for the last five days, and his doctor told him to expect another five days of feeling the worst effects, with hopefully a week of recovery afterward. In the meantime he’s taking the Z-Pak antibiotic his doctor prescribed and trying to be patient with staying in bed. The notoriously fit coach said that’s been the hardest part so far.

“It’s very frustrating, I’m very active, all I can do is lay in bed,” he said. “Can’t go outside, can’t work out–just have to wait it out.”

He said he wasn’t sure where he got the virus from.

“We don’t really go out other than we had dinner outside one time,” he said. “We wear our masks when we do go out.”
