Softball Preview: Jordan Trying To Reach Playoff Level

Jordan second-year coach Richard Gonzales is trying to get rid of “average play” in his program with the help of captains Esmeralda Hernandez, Macey Chavira and Junior Ale.

Hernandez was First-Team All-Moore League last season, and Chavira (pictured) is a three-year varsity player.

“We’re feeling much more confident than we did last year,” Chavira said. “Confidence is key. If you don’t believe in your team you can’t go anywhere.”

Returning sophomores Julissa Castro and Jazmin Morales, and returning juniors Carolina Santiago and Wendy Rodriguez are all versatile and can play multiple positions. Incoming freshman Jordin Cathey will bring speed and strength to the starting lineup.

“We have a young team and we’re really aggressive this year,” Chavira said. “It comes from the previous years. We’re not frustrated, but we’ve learned, so we’re going to come back stronger.”

Jordan is in CIF-SS Division 6 this season, but hasn’t reached the postseason in more than 15 years.
