Kaci Scott, Long Beach Poly Basketball

Long Beach Poly is off to an 11-2 start and is ranked No. 6 in the nation by MaxPreps. They had a great run through the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic in San Diego and upset national No. 1 La Jolla Country Day 45-39 in the title game, 45-39. Senior Kaci Scott locked down LJCD’s top player in the win, holding her to 15 points below her season average.

Lorenzo Marsh, St. Anthony Basketball

The St. Anthony boys’ basketball team is off to an 18-1 start and is the top team in Long Beach this year. Different players have stepped up in different games, but they got a big performance from Lorenzo Marsh, who had the game-tying bucket against Harvard-Westlake and the buzzer-beating winner in OT.

Arielle Hines, Wilson Basketball

Wilson is 11-4 to start the season and ranked No. 1 in their CIF-SS Division. The Bruins have had big games from several different players. Arielle Hines earned All-Tournament honors at the Larry Doyle and Dan Wiley Tournament of Champions. Hines is averaging 10 points per game this season with six rebounds per game.

Lesley Garcia, Millikan Basketball

Millikan is off to an undefeated 13-0 start to the season and is getting good production from an even spread of its roster. Senior Lesley Garcia led the way in their two most recent games, scoring 15 points in a win over Highland and a season-high 27 points in a win over Brentwood. She’s averaging 11.5 points per game.

An LBC native, Mike Guardabascio has been covering Long Beach sports professionally for 13 years, with his work published in dozens of Southern California magazines and newspapers. He's won numerous awards for his writing as well as the CIF Southern Section’s Champion For Character Award, and is the author of three books about Long Beach history.
