High School Football Preview: Long Beach Poly vs. Cabrillo

The oldest sports tradition in Long Beach is renewed tonight at Veterans Memorial Stadium, as Long Beach Poly celebrates its Homecoming for the 112th time. The school was founded in 1895, but had its first football season in 1908.

The Jackrabbits (3-3, 2-0) are coming off a win over Wilson in last week’s exciting Big Game. The Jackrabbits had their struggles in the non league, starting 1-3, but have since gone on to post a convincing 38-3 win over Millikan and a 42-24 win over Wilson, a pair of games that matched Poly up with two of their closest Moore League competitors.

Tonight’s opponent is Cabrillo (1-5, 0-2), a team that’s on the bottom of the Moore League standings.

The biggest question mark is whether Poly will showcase a passing game that put up five touchdowns against Wilson, or the rushing game that put up more than 350 yards in the win over Millikan. Poly coach Stephen Barbee was coy last week when asked about his team’s plans.

“We’re going to continue taking what the defense gives us,” said Barbee.
