High School Football Preview: Wilson vs. Cabrillo

This Moore League matchup between Wilson and Cabrillo tonight is a classic trap game for the Bruins. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Cabrillo HS.

Wilson (5-0, 1-0) is off to its best start since 1962 and has been anticipating its game against Long Beach Poly next week. But first thing’s first, the Bruins have to deal with the athletic Jaguars (1-4, 0-1) hungry for a win.

“We just have to stay the course,” Wilson coach Mark Ziegenhagen said. “Our senior leaders have done a good job of keeping us focused.”

Wilson rolled to an easy 55-14 win at Compton last week while putting up more gaudy offensive numbers. Quarterback Ryan Pettway is averaging 235 yards passing per game while completing 71 percent of his attempts. The senior has 15 touchdown passes and two interceptions.

Cabrillo got shutout by Lakewood last week in its league opener. Head coach Mike Ulufale said he’s very impressed with the Wilson team he’s seen on film this week.

“They look like the top program in the Moore League,” Ulufale said.
