Long Beach Sports Calendar: Sept. 19-25

THURSDAY

High School Girls’ Tennis, 3 p.m.

This is the first week of Moore League action and all eight league teams are in action this afternoon. Defending league champions Long Beach Poly are hosting Compton while Wilson travels to Compton. In other action, Lakewood is hosting Cabrillo while Millikan takes on CAMS at El Dorado Tennis Courts.

High School Girls’ Golf, 2:30 p.m.

One of the most important Moore League girls’ golf matches of the year is today at Recreation Park Golf Course 18 where the defending champions Wilson are hosting Millikan. The Rams lost to the Bruins by only a few strokes last season. In other action, Lakewood is hosting Poly at Skylinks Golf Course.

Long Beach State Women’s Soccer vs. UCF, 7 p.m.

The Beach is still licking its wounds from being held scoreless last weekend through two games in Texas. LBSU is back at George Allen Field tonight for another good pre-conference challenge against the University of Central Florida. The Knights (3-1-2) have quality wins over Florida and Arizona State. LBSU lost its only meeting with UCF 1-0 in 2014.

Long Beach State Men’s Water Polo vs. No. 1 USC, 7 p.m.

The Beach is getting its biggest test of the year tonight at No. 1 USC. LBSU is ranked No. 7 in the latest coaches poll.

FRIDAY

High School Football, 7 p.m.

The Moore League season gets underway tonight with three games as Wilson travels to Compton, Millikan hosts Jordan and Lakewood visits Cabrillo. Wilson is the hottest team in the league at 4-0 and its defense will get a unique challenge against the Compton wing-T rushing attack. Jordan is a surprise 3-0 this season and will visit a Rams team that’s hungry for a win. Lastly, the Lakewood and Cabrillo game could end up deciding which fourth place team is chasing a playoff spot next month.

In other action, Poly is hosting Corona Centennial at Veterans Memorial Stadium in the last nonleague game of the season. St. Anthony will be at St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy and Avalon will be at Amino Robinson.

Long Beach State Women’s Volleyball vs. No. 20 USC, 4 p.m.

The Beach is in San Diego this weekend for three matches. After visiting San Diego State at 7 p.m. on Thursday, LBSU will take on No. 2 USC in the first game of the San Diego Tournament hosted by the Toreros. The Beach will take on host USD at 7 on Saturday night.

Long Beach City College Women’s Volleyball vs. Cypress, 6 p.m.

The Vikings are looking to get back on track at home tonight.

SATURDAY

Long Beach State Men’s Water Polo vs. Air Force

A week after beating the Air Force Academy at the Inland Empire Classic, LBSU is traveling to Colorado Springs, Colo., to play Air Force in the Air Force Tournament. The Beach will play three more games today and Sunday to finish the tournament.

TUESDAY

High School Girls’ Volleyball, 4:30 p.m.

The premier rivalry in Moore League girls’ volleyball renews this afternoon when Long Beach Poly visits Lakewood. In other action, Wilson will host Jordan while Millikan travels to Compton.

WEDNESDAY

Moore League Boys’ Water Polo Showcase

All six Long Beach boys’ water polo teams will be at Cabrillo this evening for three games to kick off the Moore League season. The Jaguars will start things off at 4 p.m. against Lakewood, Millikan will face Jordan at 5:10 and Poly will take on defending league champion Wilson at 6:20.
