HIGH SCHOOL

Carlos Mota, Wilson Soccer

Wilson won its first Moore League boys’ soccer championship in 12 years last week, thanks to the literally last-minute heroics of Carlos Mota, who scored the decisive goal in a 1-0 win over second-place Cabrillo in the final minute of the game.

Deja Williams, Long Beach Poly Basketball

CSUN signee Deja Williams had a big performance in Long Beach Poly’s narrow 41-38 Moore League championship win over Millikan last week. Williams had a team-high nine points, five of which came in a crucial fourth-quarter stretch, as well as five rebounds, three assists, and four steals.

Karli Slater, Millikan Soccer

Millikan senior Karli Slater comes from a long line of Slaters to have played sports at Millikan, and she added a memorable chapter to the school and family lore last week. Her first-minute goal against Long Beach Poly gave the Rams their first outright girls’ soccer title since 1985.

Shayna Sanders, Compton Basketball

Senior Shayna Sanders was a star for Compton last week in a one-game tiebreaker game with Wilson to decide which team was going to the playoffs as the Moore League’s fourth seed. Sanders had 25 points on 9/13 shooting with 16 rebounds, four assists, and three steals to give Compton the win.
