The562.org’s Athletes Of The Week

Congratulations to this week’s Athletes of the Week and thanks to Naples Rib Company for their sponsorship.

Javi Cervantez, Wilson Soccer

Wilson is ahead of the rest of the Moore League with two weeks left until the playoffs start, and it’s been a total team effort. Last week it was Javi Cervantes who pushed them to a 2-0 win over Jordan with two assists, both in the first half. Cervantes sent a cross to Gustavo Cervantes in the 33rd minute and then teed up service for Daniel Frazier two minutes later.

Malik Salahuddin, Poly Basketball

Poly senior Malik Salahuddin’s defense sparked a 45-44 win over Compton last week as he helped lock in with five steals, as well as 13 points on offense. In addition to helping jumpstart the Jackrabbits’ defense, Salahuddin came up clutch at the free throw line, with four free throws made out of four attempts in crunch time to keep Poly ahead.

Christian Monge, Millikan Soccer

Millikan was happy to come away with a draw against Wilson on the road last week, 2-2. It was a back and forth time but it was junior Christian Monge who took advantage of a defensive miscue to beat Wilson goalie Norman Chang with a side angle shot, equalizing and providing Millikan with some much-needed points.

Kalasia Levine, Wilson Basketball

Wilson is in control of the Moore League’s fourth and final playoff spot after a critical win against Compton last week. That came thanks to Kalasia Levine, who hit a game-winning shot with seven seconds left in the game. Levine finished with nine points in the win.
