PREVIEW: Long Beach Poly vs. Dorsey Football

A new era of Long Beach Poly football will kick off at Rancho Cienega Sports Complex against Dorsey tonight at 7 p.m.

It’s a battle of two public schools who’ve done it the right way for generations. Poly is the CIF Southern Section’s all-time wins leader and Dorsey is the LA City Section’s all-time wins leader, and they’re the top two NFL talent-producing schools in the nation.

“Two historic public schools, a great way to start the year,” said first-year Poly coach Stephen Barbee.

The Jackrabbits’ new coach isn’t feeling jittery about the game, but said he’s excited.

“I feel like I’ve had a sports car the last few months but it’s been in the garage,” he said. “I’m looking forward to getting it out on the road and hitting the gas.”

There was good news on Wednesday afternoon for Poly fans as a couple of key transfers were approved as eligible to play: namely, QB CJ Montes and defensive lineman Chuck Taylor.

“I was happy for them (that they were cleared),” said Barbee. “They’ve been working hard and I’m glad they’ll get to start the season the right way.”
