Welcome back to our weekly Athletes of the Week awards.

HIGH SCHOOL

Malik Salahuddin, Long Beach Poly Basketball

Poly junior Malik Salahuddin showed how bright the Jackrabbits’ future is last week in a pair of state playoff games. Salahuddin led the way for Poly in a first-round road game against El Camino Real with 26 points and four steals, then chipped in 10 points against St. John Bosco in a second-round loss.

Frank Staine, St. Anthony Basketball

St. Anthony played two games in the state playoffs last week and Frank Staine was a big part of both, chipping in 10 points in a first-round win at home and then scoring a team-high 16 points in a double overtime loss in Palmdale against Knight.

COLLEGE

Joe Fryer, Long Beach State Golf

The 49er golf program’s excellent season continued last weekend at the Sacramento State Invitational. Junior Joe Fryer shot a final-round 67 (-5) at the Sacramento State Invitational to charge up the leaderboard and claim individual medalist honors for the second time in his career.

Nichole Frye, Long Beach State Softball

The No. 21 49ers fell 6-5 to No. 3 UCLA but junior shortstop Nichole Frye had a phenomenal game. Frye was 2/2 with one run scored and three RBI, representing or batting in four of her team’s five runs. It’s even more impressive considering that UCLA’s ace, Rachel Garcia, improved to 10-0 on the season.
