Long Beach City College Weekend Recap

The Long Beach City College beach volleyball team looked like one of the best in California on Friday when the Vikings swept Rio Honda College and Bakersfield College at Granada Beach. LBCC freshman Josannah Vazquez and Sierra Davis used a two-point win to edge their Rio Honda opponents, and swept Bakersfield.

LBCC (8-1, 1-0) is hosting Orange Coast, Mt. San Antonio and Cypress on Friday. Matches start at 10 a.m. at Granada Beach.

Softball

The Vikings (12-10, 1-3) played two home games last week and picked up their first conference win by beating Compton 4-0 two days before they edged Pasadena 1-0.

LBCC sophomore Alissa Cienfuegos pitched both complete game shutouts. She allowed six hits and struck out 14 batters in the win over Compton. Cienfuegos only allowed three hits against Pasadena while striking out nine. She has 76 strikeouts this season with a 2.96 ERA. Before the rains postponed their weekend games, the Vikings (10-9, 2-2) split two conference games with East Los Angles last week. LBCC won at home 5-4 before falling on the road to the exact same score two days later.

Shortstop David Rivera and center fielder Aaron Fawcett also had a pair of hits. Rivera, a Lakewood High alum, leads the Vikings with a .410 batting average.

LBCC is at Mt. San Antonio today, and hosts Rio Hondo on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. to kick off a conference series.
