HIGH SCHOOL

Jadon Jones, St. Anthony Basketball

St. Anthony senior Jadon Jones was named MVP of the Ryse Williams Pac Shores Tournament last weekend after leading the Saints to a 4-0 tournament championship. Jones had 23 points, five rebounds, and six assists in the team’s first game, and 27 points, five rebounds, and three steals in the championship, a win over Bishop Montgomery.

Ronan McMahon-Staggs, Poly Cross Country

The Long Beach Poly boys’ cross country team qualified for the CIF State Finals for the third consecutive year on Saturday. The Jackrabbits finished fifth at the CIF-SS Finals, led by senior Ronan McMahon-Staggs, who finished 10th overall with a time of 15:07. 

COLLEGE

Justina King, Long Beach State Basketball

It’s been a difficult start to the season for the Long Beach State women’s basketball team, which is off to a 1-4 record after injuries to several key players. Justina King played all 40 minutes during a loss to LMU on Saturday, tallying a team-high 23 points with four steals and two assists.

Divine Obichere, LBCC Football

The Vikings had a strong defensive showing in a Bowl Game win over Southwestern on Saturday in their season finale. That effort was led by Divine Obichere, who had a team-high seven tackles along with two sacks and three tackles for a loss. Obichere earned Southern California Bowl MVP honors for his performance.

 

Mike Guardabascio
An LBC native, Mike Guardabascio has been covering Long Beach sports professionally for 13 years, with his work published in dozens of Southern California magazines and newspapers. He's won numerous awards for his writing as well as the CIF Southern Section’s Champion For Character Award, and is the author of three books about Long Beach history.
