Long Beach State women’s basketball coach Amy Wright is departing the Beach to take a job as the associate head coach at Alabama.
Wright was the coach at Long Beach State for three years, compiling a record of 15-18 her first year, 16-14 her second year, and bottoming out at 5-25 this season for a three year total of 36-57 overall.
The Beach lost their top player JaQuoia Jones-Brown after this season, as she announced that she was transferring to James Madison. Lauren Cummings announced in her Instagram post three weeks ago about entering the transfer portal that, “With the current direction of the program, I have decided to enter the transfer portal.”
“On behalf of Long Beach State Athletics, I want to thank Coach Wright for her years of leadership, hard work, and commitment to our student-athletes,” said LBSU athletic director Bobby Smitheran in a statement. “We wish Amy nothing but success in this next chapter of her coaching career. This is an important moment for Long Beach State Women’s Basketball, and we are energized by the opportunity to identify a new leader who will elevate our program and position us for sustained success. Our women’s basketball program has a proud history, great potential, and we will embark on a national search immediately to advance Beach Basketball.”
The university said that a national search for its next women’s basketball coach will begin immediately.
