HIGH SCHOOL

Tate Hammond, Long Beach Poly Baseball

Long Beach Poly avenged last year’s loss to Valley Christian by defeating the Defenders 7-1 this year. UCLA commit Tate Hammond had a big offensive day going 3/4 with two singles, a double and three RBIs.

Malakai Pruitt, Long Beach Poly Baseball

Malakai Pruitt had a big day on the mound for the Jackrabbits in their win against Valley Christian. Pruitt pitched the first complete game for Long Beach Poly, only allowing four hits, striking out five and walking none.

Fiona Tanioco, Wilson Girls’ Lacrosse

Wilson defeated league rival Downey in a 3-2 overtime thriller last week. Junior attacker Fiona Tanioco scored two of Wilson’s goals including the game-winner 13 seconds into overtime. 

Alexandra “Furby” Rios, Millikan Girls’ Soccer

The Millikan girls’ soccer team had an extraordinary playoff run this year. Alexandra “Furby” Rios got the scoring started in their 7-0 first-round CIF State win by finding the back of the net in the first minute.

Samantha Ortiz, Millikan Girls’ Soccer

Millikan’s playoff run saw success on both the offensive and defensive side of things. Goalkeeper Samantha Ortiz led the Rams to their 13th straight clean sheet and came up clutch in the PK shootout to lead Millikan’s second-round win in the CIF State tournament.

Kaden Wright, Wilson Boys’ Lacrosse

Wilson boys’ lacrosse secured a win over their rivals in Long Beach Poly. Kaden Wright had a hat trick in the Bruins’ 12-1 win.

Ryan Bruce, Wilson Boys’ Lacrosse

On the defensive side of Wilson’s win against Long Beach Poly, Ryan Bruce held the Bruins down. Bruce continued his strong play and allowed just one goal to go with his four saves. 

COLLEGE

Rori Denness-Lamont, LBSU Track & Field

Rori Denness-Lamont had a historic showing for the Beach in women’s javelin. The graduate student broke a school record and won her event with a throw of 53.89 meters (176’9”).

Nina Fife
Nina Fife is a junior at Pepperdine University double majoring in Journalism and English with a writing and rhetoric emphasis. She began working with The562 in the inaugural intern class before being hired as their Social Media Director and now Assistant Editor. Nina is a proud Long Beach schools alum who graduated with valedictorian honors.
