With two weeks remaining in the Moore League soccer season every contest starts to mean more.
Every point will matter as the regular season comes to a close. That was evident Friday night after the Long Beach Poly and Lakewood boys’ soccer teams took turns putting together opportunities, but neither were able to cash in on those chances as the contest ended in a 0-0 draw.
It wasn’t a complete disappointment for both teams as they each walked away with a point and both remained in the top three in the standings. For the Jackrabbits, the point lifted them to first place – one point ahead of Millikan who has played one less league game.
“That was a really great game,” Long Beach Poly coach Carlos Casillas said. “We knew what Lakewood was going to bring. So we’re ready and you can see the game. No goals, but hey that was a great game. The second round of Moore League everyone makes adjustments and it was just an even game.”
In the early minutes of the game Carlos Casillas Jr. sent in a cross but the pass came up empty as the Jackrabbits weren’t able to get a shot attempt off. Lakewood responded on their own set piece and after Jason Lara sent in a cross but a header attempt was off the mark.
That was the story of the night as both teams continued to take their shots, but both teams’ defenses cleared the ball when they needed to.
“The first game was a fight as well,” Lakewood coach Alex Diaz said. “So, we talked about that as a team. We talked about guys finishing the game off. We don’t get a goal, well let’s get a point. It’s a big point for us.”
The point puts Lakewood at 16 points overall one point behind Millikan with another match looming against the Rams next Friday.
The Lancers continued to get opportunities in front of the goal a few minutes later as William Oliveira sent in a cross that Michael Gutierrez was able to get to, but his header attempt was wide left as the two teams continued to come up empty on their attempts.
Poly continued to apply pressure on corners kicks including one header from James Alonso but Lakewood goalie Pol Luna came up with the stop.
Both teams continued to try and get good looks to score, but both came up empty as the game ended in a tie.
The Jackrabbits has a big contest when they travel to take on Millikan on Monday while Lakewood travels to Cabrillo to face the Jaguars.
