HIGH SCHOOL

Jayla Cortes, Millikan Girls’ Soccer

Jayla Cortes sparked the big first half the Millikan Rams had in their win over Long Beach Poly. The sophomore scored the first goal of the game in the 12th minute en route to a 4-0 victory.

Nana Ofoegbu, Long Beach Poly Boys’ Basketball

Long Beach Poly guard Nana Ofoegbu was a crucial player in the Jackrabbits’ win over rival Wilson, scoring 19 points throughout the game. With the 70-56 win, the Jackrabbits improved to 2-0 in Moore League play.

MJ Reed, Cabrillo Boys’ Basketball

Cabrillo secured a tight 59-53 victory in the 710 Rivalry game between the Jags and Jordan Panthers. Senior point guard MJ Reed led Cabrillo’s scoring with 17 points in the win.

Salvador Alfaro, Long Beach Poly Boys’ Soccer

Long Beach Poly pulled off a 2-1 win against their rivals, the Wilson Bruins. Salvador Alfaro scored the difference-maker in the 28th minute to secure the victory.

Quali Giran, Millikan Boys’ Basketball

Quali Giran has been a standout in the Moore League boys’ basketball scene and a huge asset to the Millikan Rams. The freshman was the top scorer in Millikan’s dominant 89-31 win over Lakewood, putting down 26 points.

Aniyah Lindsey, Lakewood Girls’ Basketball

Lakewood won a tough battle against the Millikan Rams in a 58-45 final score. Freshman Aniyah Lindsey has been a major player for the Lancers, and she got the scoring started for her team en route to the victory.

COLLEGE

Skyler Varga, LBSU Men’s Volleyball

The reigning NCAA champs got off to a hot start with a 2-0 record on back-to-back sweeps at home in the LBS Financial Credit Union Pyramid. Skyler Varga led the Beach in both games with nine kills in each match paired with a match-high seven aces in their most recent sweep against McKendree.

Nina Fife
Nina Fife is a junior at Pepperdine University double majoring in Journalism and English with a writing and rhetoric emphasis. She began working with The562 in the inaugural intern class before being hired as their Social Media Director and now Assistant Editor. Nina is a proud Long Beach schools alum who graduated with valedictorian honors.
