The 2025 cross country season came to a close on Saturday afternoon in Fresno, where the Wilson Bruins girls’ team competed at the CIF State Cross Country Championships at Woodward Park.

Facing a field of 24 teams and 197 runners in Division 1, the Bruins finished 12th as a group, led by senior Nadia Mejia, who placed 22nd in a time of 18:01.

This was just the second appearance for the Wilson girls at the CIF State meet, and they got out well as a unit, sitting in eighth position after the opening mile. The Bruins were hanging in the Top 10 until the final mile when they slipped back to 12th.

Mejia opened the race with a 5:34 opening mile, sitting in 33rd, and gradually moved her way up the pack. After the second mile split she was up to 23rd, and picked up one more spot over the final third of the race.

Next for Wilson was Audrey Buckley, who ran a time of 18:39 to finish in 65th position. Next up for the Bruins was Ashlei Aguayo, who finished 95th with a time of 19:04.

Avery Errecart ran a time of 19:12, Riley Jones finished in 19:30, with Ella George not far behind in a time of 19:33. Leticia Tovar was the final finisher for Wilson, moving up 17 spots after the opening mile and clocking a time of 19:54.

The State appearance is a great way to close out the season for the Moore League champions. Wilson is the first Long Beach team to reach the state meet since the Long Beach Poly girls placed 13th in the Division 1 race in 2022.

Wilson’s 12th place finish as a team in 2025 is the best finish for a Long Beach team since the Poly boys’ squad placed 11th at the 2019 State Championships.
