It came down to the last throw of their regular season, Majesty Aupiu took a handoff from Jai’r Condley, ran toward the line of scrimmage and then tossed the ball to Dion Myers for a game-winning overtime touchdown that led St. Anthony to a 13-10 win over Havard-Westlake on Friday.
With the thrilling victory, the Saints (3-7) secured the third automatic spot out of the Del Rey League and now are back in the playoffs as the third-place team.
St. Anthony will be the No.1-seed in Division 11 and will host El Monte, the first-place team out of the Mission Valley League, on Friday.
It’s the third straight year the Saints will be in the playoffs and the second straight year under coach Jeff Magdaleno, who has successfully navigated a tough non-league schedule to take a league auto-bid.
The Saints were the top seed in last year’s division 10 bracket and are in the same position this year in division 11. St. Anthony is looking forward to recreating the run they had last year when they made it all the way to the CIF championship before losing in the title game to Silverado.
El Monte (8-2) is led by senior QB Alex Aleman who has thrown for 2,000 yards and 20 touchdowns. They also have senior RB Aaron Rivera who has amassed 1,000 yards on the ground and scored 12 touchdowns.
