Girls’ Golf: St. Anthony Claims Historic Del Rey League Title

St. Anthony girls’ golf clinched the Del Rey League title for the fifth consecutive year. The Saints finished with an overall record of 14-1 and an 8-1 in-league record.

“All their hard work and dedication during the offseason paid off,” Head Coach Robert Klenk said. “It all came together during the season.”

The one loss of the season for St. Anthony came against St. Monica Prep on Sept. 17. The Saints won the next eight to help clinch the league title and prepare for the individual tournament.

“That loss humbled the girls,” Klenk said. “We were undefeated for four years in a row, and it basically lit a fire in them again, to not lose at home against St. Monica that beat us by three strokes.”

Jasmyn
Jasmyn Munoz is crowned the individual champion of the Del Rey League. She shot a 116 in the tournament to take the title.

The top three golfers in the Del Rey League represented St. Anthony on the green in Jasmyn Munoz, Jacqueline Hufana and freshman Chloe Sakatani. All three of these golfers also earned First Team All-League honors.

Munoz shot a 116 in the Del Rey League Individual tournament to be crowned the league’s champion. Sakatani and Hufana both shot a 125 to take second and third place in the tournament, respectively.

They were supported by Clarissa Claudio, Julia Hernandez and Emily De La Rosa who each earned Second Team All-League honors. Claudio was the fourth and final saint to finish in the top ten individual rankings in eighth place.

“I basically started with the fundamentals, working on putting, chipping and driving,” Klenk said of how his team earned their success this year. “Then, coursework, playing on the course, getting to know the courses, the home and away courses that we play just all made the team stronger to compete better.”

Munoz, Hufana and Sakatani’s success sent them through to CIF Individuals competition, which will begin Oct. 27.
