Sometimes all you need is to be home.
That was the case for the Long Beach State women’s soccer team as they shook off a four-game losing streak with a historic 6-0 win against Nevada Thursday night at George Allen Field.
The six goals and six-goal victory tied a program record that was last matched 2018 when the Beach defeated St. John’s by the same margin.
“We needed to get the first goal,” Long Beach State coach Mauricio Ingrassia said after the team’s tough road trip. “Then we needed to get rolling for the second goal. This here is a very tough team that never gives up and if you watch some of their games, they scored late to come back and tie. I knew we were going to knock them out.”
LBSU (2-4) finally broke through in the 26th minute when Cherrie Cox scored on her own rebound to give the Beach a 1-0 lead. Cox missed the last two games for the Beach, but her goal came at a perfect time that started a chain reaction for her teammates.
“It’s about the team,” Ingrassia said about Cox’s return. “Cherrie is kind of the cherry on top when she comes back. No pun intended, but it was good for her to get us going with the first goal.”
The Beach continued to control possession and in the 34th minute Ameera White was in the right place as she connected and put a cross from Radisson Banks in the back of the net to put the Beach up 2-0. The goal was White’s first collegiate goal of her career.
“It was good to contribute to the team,” White said. “It’s one through 28. Everybody contributes, so just to be able to do that and have quality in that moment. It was really nice to be able to just give it to the team.”
Kailey Supa continued the dominating night for the Beach when she scored her first of two goals on a header on a pass from Ruby Mansour to push LBSU’s lead to 3-0.
LBSU was just getting started as Radisson Banks took a pass from Cox and outpaced a defender to score to make it 4-0 in the 67th minute. Banks finished the night with one goal and two assists.
“First, I just want to give all glory to God. It’s been tough,” Banks said about the team’s four-game losing streak. “It’s never easy. Just making sure we keep the main thing the main thing. This whole week was really just about one through 28 and just understanding we want to get out of this slump.”
That top to bottom approach to the whole team contributing continued into the final minutes as Jordan Candelaria scored her first goal of the season on an assist from Banks to make it 5-0 in the 73rd minute.
Then Supa capped the historic night with her second goal of the night give the Beach a 6-0 lead.
“Our energy for sure,” Supa said about what was the biggest difference on Thursday compared to the road trip. “On the road we’re gonna be tired. But we always kept our head up which has always been the same which is definitely how we were able to pick it up from here.”
The Beach picked up a big win in their first of three home games before they open Big West action. They’ll be back at George Allen Field on Thursday to take on San Diego.
“We’re accelerating now,” Ingrassia said. “These three games are for us to kind of get going as we have conference after that. So it’s really really good.”
