The Blueprint Award: Jordan and Compton High School

The562’s coverage of Jordan Athletics is sponsored by former LBUSD superintendent Chris Steinhauser.

It’s not necessarily fun going to a school that’s under construction, with the skeletons of the future being put up all around you—buildings and facilities you know you might not get a chance to step into as a student. For students and student-athletes at Jordan and Compton High, the long wait is finally over, however. This Fall, both schools will be unveiling long-awaited major campus improvements.

Jordan is nearing the end of a total-campus revitalization that’s happened in phases. Currently the school’s gym is being rebuilt, but most excitingly for Northside sports fans is this year’s opening of the new football stadium at Jordan. Not only will the Panthers finally have a turf stadium to match the other schools in the Moore League, they’ll also have a state of the art video screen on their scoreboard.

Meanwhile Compton High has been attending classes for the last several years at Roosevelt Middle School while their campus was completely torn down and rebuilt in one go. This Fall, the Compton students will finally return to their own campus featuring state of the art creative, academic, and athletic facilities. The football stadium bears the iconic baby blue of the Compton logo, and features a turf field for the first time as well.

We’ve heard many stories over the years from athletes and coaches who were waiting patiently—or impatiently—for these facilities to open. Now, a new era for North Long Beach and Compton is here, and we’re excited to see student-athletes to get to step into the future as the 2025-26 school year starts.
