HIGH SCHOOL

Iyla Alvarado and Jane Morrison, Wilson Girls’ Beach Volleyball

The Wilson Bruins faced off with the Millikan Rams on the sand for a CIF-SS Championship rematch between the two Long Beach teams. Alvarado and Morrison came back to win a close third set and finish off the sweep for Wilson’s 5-0 win over Millikan.

Tobin Hackney, Wilson Boys’ Volleyball

Junior Tobin Hackney had a huge day for the Wilson Bruins in their sweep against Lakewood. Hackney had a match-high 18 kills in the three-set win.

Persjah Lam Sam, Long Beach Poly Softball

Long Beach Poly blanked Lakewood on Moore League Softball’s Opening Day. Persjah Lam Sam got things started as the leadoff for the Jackrabbits, ending the day 3/4 with a home run, two doubles, two runs and two RBIs in the 10-0 victory.

Will Trunnelle, Long Beach Poly Baseball

Will Trunnelle was the hero for Long Beach Poly in their comeback win against Jordan. The Jackrabbit knocked in two runs with an RBI single in the seventh inning to put Poly up and closed out the game on the mound when he moved from first base to pitch the final out.

COLLEGE

Jason Gerfers, LBSU Baseball

Jason Gerfers pitched a complete game against Hawai’i to clinch a 2-1 win and the series over the Rainbow Warriors. The freshman’s performance earned him Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week with seven strikeouts, four hits and one earned run allowed on 123 pitches. 

Gavin Sykes, LBSU Men’s Basketball

After an outstanding first year, Gavin Sykes was named the Big West Freshman of the Year and earned Second Team All-Big West honors. Sykes averaged 19.4 points per game, one of only six freshmen in the nation to average above 19 points this season.

Ryan Gregory, LBSU Track and Field

Ryan Gregory had a huge week for Long Beach State on the road. As Long Beach’s lone representative at the 2026 NCAA Indoor Championship, Gregory recorded two personal bests in the shot put and high jump as part of the men’s heptathlon.

Nina Fife
Nina Fife is a junior at Pepperdine University double majoring in Journalism and English with a writing and rhetoric emphasis. She began working with The562 in the inaugural intern class before being hired as their Social Media Director and now Assistant Editor. Nina is a proud Long Beach schools alum who graduated with valedictorian honors.
